Located in Lapa, in the historic centre of Rio de Janeiro, the Socio-Educational Centre is the main attendance unit of the Emergency Line, which functions as an open door to children and adolescents who live on the streets. The idea is to present them a different reality from the one they have experienced in their daily lives and to arouse their interest in it by means of diversified activities. Here, boys and girls may take a bath, change and receive medical, dental, social and psychological care, guidance on hygiene and disease prevention, and three daily meals. Principally, they are offered help, respect and care and have access to educational activities, art workshops, sports, school help and literacy. Besides this, an important task of familial re-integration is done with these children and adolescents, aiming at bringing them closer to their families. When this is not possible, they are taken to our homes or other institutions.
