To preserve the human dignity of children and adolescents from 5 to 18 in a situation of social risk, providing them the means to develop effectiveness, citizenship and spirituality.

· To help in the formation of young people, aiming for their autonomy and stimulating them towards solidarity, faith and responsibility; · To rescue children and adolescents who live on the streets, favouring family re-integration; · To contribute to the strengthening of family ties; · To contribute to the professional initiation of young people; · To act in the legal and social defence of children and adolescents; · To facilitate the entrance of young people into the formal job market; · To contribute to the re-integration of juvenile offenders into the familiar and social environment; · To contribute to the formulation and implementation of public policies relating to childhood and adolescence; and · To contribute to the training of social educators.

The development of São Martinho's activities contributes to the end that "children and adolescents enjoy all fundamental rights inherent to a human being, without prejudice to the complete protection which this law denotes, assuring them, by law or by other means, all opportunities and facilities, with the aim of granting their physical, mental, moral, spiritual and social development, in conditions of freedom and dignity."
